What it is

We extract a tooth only when it cannot be saved: a root fractured lengthways, decay below the gum, a failed root canal that cannot be retreated, or a wisdom tooth that is impacted or repeatedly infected. Everything else is restored first.

Simple extractions loosen and lift the tooth; surgical extractions open the gum and sometimes section the tooth, which is the norm for lower wisdom teeth. Both are done by our oral surgeon under local anaesthetic, with sedation available.

  • Why patients choose it
  • Only when the tooth cannot be saved

Is it for me?

Is it right for me?

Usually a good fit

  • Impacted or repeatedly infected wisdom teeth
  • Failed root canals that cannot be retreated

  • Uncontrolled diabetes or blood thinners without a doctor's plan
  • Active infection needing antibiotics first
Risks

What can go wrong

Every treatment has risks. Here are the honest ones, and what we do about them.

Dry socket

Loss of the blood clot in the first days causes pain; avoiding smoking, straws and rinsing for 48 hours prevents most cases, and a dressing treats it.

Swelling and bruising

Common after surgical and wisdom tooth removals for three to five days; cold packs and prescribed painkillers manage it.

Nerve proximity

Lower wisdom teeth can sit near the nerve; the panoramic scan and, if needed, a CBCT show this before we operate.

Aftercare

Aftercare and how long it lasts

  • Bite on gauze for 30–60 minutes
  • No rinsing, smoking or straws for 48 hours
  • Soft, cool food for two days
  • Painkillers as prescribed; call us if pain worsens after day three
How long it lasts

Healing takes one to two weeks; the bone remodels over three to six months, which is when an implant is placed.

FAQ

Questions patients ask

Can I fly after a tooth extraction?

Yes, usually the next day for simple extractions and after two to three days for surgical ones; we schedule the check before your flight.
