Surgical means the tooth cannot simply be lifted out. Bone is preserved wherever possible and a graft can be placed in the same visit so an implant can follow after healing.
A surgical extraction is chosen when the tooth is broken below the gum, has curved roots or is impacted; if the tooth is intact and loose enough, a simple extraction costs less and heals faster.
We extract a tooth only when it cannot be saved: a root fractured lengthways, decay below the gum, a failed root canal that cannot be retreated, or a wisdom tooth that is impacted or repeatedly infected. Everything else is restored first.
Simple extractions loosen and lift the tooth; surgical extractions open the gum and sometimes section the tooth, which is the norm for lower wisdom teeth. Both are done by our oral surgeon under local anaesthetic, with sedation available.
- Why patients choose it

Is it right for me?

Usually a good fit
- ✓Teeth broken below the gum or cracked to the root
- ✓Impacted or repeatedly infected wisdom teeth
- ✓Failed root canals that cannot be retreated
- ✓Teeth removed to make room for implants or aligners
Not ideal, or treated first
- –Teeth that a filling, root canal or crown can still save
- –Uncontrolled diabetes or blood thinners without a doctor's plan
- –Active infection needing antibiotics first
What can go wrong
Every treatment has risks. Here are the honest ones, and what we do about them.

Dry socket
Loss of the blood clot in the first days causes pain; avoiding smoking, straws and rinsing for 48 hours prevents most cases, and a dressing treats it.
Swelling and bruising
Common after surgical and wisdom tooth removals for three to five days; cold packs and prescribed painkillers manage it.
Nerve proximity
Lower wisdom teeth can sit near the nerve; the panoramic scan and, if needed, a CBCT show this before we operate.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
- Bite on gauze for 30–60 minutes
- No rinsing, smoking or straws for 48 hours
- Soft, cool food for two days
- Painkillers as prescribed; call us if pain worsens after day three

Healing takes one to two weeks; the bone remodels over three to six months, which is when an implant is placed.
Questions patients ask
What is the difference between simple and surgical extraction?
Simple: the tooth is loosened and lifted out. Surgical: the gum is opened, bone may be removed and the tooth sectioned, then stitched. Surgical costs more and swells more.
How much is a surgical extraction in Turkey?
£[—] per tooth at Auradentis (indicative £80–200) versus £250–450 in the UK.
Can an implant be placed at the same time as a surgical extraction?
Sometimes, if there is no infection and enough bone; otherwise a graft is placed and the implant follows after three to six months.
How much is a tooth extraction in Turkey?
£[—] for a simple and £[—] for a surgical or wisdom tooth extraction at Auradentis (indicative £30–80 and £80–200), versus £150–450 in the UK.
Can I fly after a tooth extraction?
Yes, usually the next day for simple extractions and after two to three days for surgical ones; we schedule the check before your flight.
Do I need to replace an extracted tooth?
Back teeth and any visible tooth yes, to keep the bite and prevent neighbours drifting; an implant is placed after three to six months, or a bridge sooner.
Is wisdom tooth removal painful?
Not during (local anaesthetic or sedation); expect swelling and soreness for three to five days, managed with cold packs and painkillers.
