Whitening before composite bonding: why the order matters

Composite does not whiten. Lighten the natural teeth first, in the same visit, and match the composite to the new shade.

Updated 1 October 2026

The rule in one sentence

Whiten first, then bond, because composite keeps whatever colour it was given on the day it was placed.

Why composite will not whiten

Whitening gel works by breaking down coloured molecules inside enamel and dentine. Composite is a resin filled with glass particles. There is nothing in it for the gel to act on. The same is true of porcelain veneers, zirconium crowns and old fillings: natural tooth lightens, restorations stay exactly as they are.

So if you whiten after bonding, the natural teeth around the composite get lighter and the bonded teeth suddenly look dark by comparison. The only fix is to redo the bonding.

How we sequence it

At Auradentis the whitening and the bonding happen in the same visit, in that order:

  1. Cleaning. Surface stain is removed so the gel reaches the enamel evenly.
  2. In-office whitening. A gum barrier is placed and two to three cycles of gel and light are applied. The session takes about an hour and lightens teeth by two to four shades.
  3. Shade selection. The new shade is recorded against a shade guide.
  4. Bonding. Composite is layered and shaped to match the lighter teeth, then polished.

The whole appointment runs one to five hours depending on how many teeth are bonded.

Why not whiten weeks in advance

Textbooks suggest waiting about two weeks between whitening and bonding, because freshly whitened enamel holds residual oxygen that can weaken the bond for a short period. That works for a patient who lives nearby and can come twice.

For someone flying in for one or two days it is not practical, so we whiten and bond in the same appointment and manage the bond strength clinically. It is an honest trade-off and you should know it is being made.

What whitening will and will not do

Will: lift coffee, tea, wine and age-related yellowing by two to four shades.

Will not: change the colour of existing fillings, crowns or veneers; lift grey tetracycline staining much; make teeth permanently white. Expect one to three years before a touch-up, depending on coffee and smoking.

We do not supply take-home kits and we do not do internal bleaching of a single dark tooth, because both need several appointments spread over weeks.

If a filling or crown shows when you smile

Whitening makes the mismatch more obvious, not less. Old composite fillings on front teeth are usually replaced after whitening so everything matches; that is part of the same bonding appointment. A crown or veneer cannot be matched without replacing it, which is a separate decision and a separate quote.

Practical points

Sensitivity for one to three days is common and settles. Avoid coffee, tea, red wine and coloured food for 48 hours after the appointment, which is the same rule that protects new bonding.
