"Lift" describes the visual result; the X-ray decides whether gum alone or gum plus bone needs to move for a stable outcome.
A gum lift is the fix when the gum line sits too low across the front teeth; when a single tooth is the odd one out, a smaller gum line correction on that tooth is all you need.
A gingivectomy removes and reshapes a small amount of gum tissue so the teeth look longer and the gum line runs evenly. It is the fix for a gummy smile, for teeth that look short because gum covers them, and for an uneven line on the front teeth.
We do it with a soft-tissue laser where possible: less bleeding, faster healing and no stitches. When bone also needs reshaping (crown lengthening), it is a small surgical procedure done by our periodontist.

What can go wrong

Soreness
Mild soreness for two to three days; managed with over-the-counter painkillers and a soft diet.
Regrowth
If only gum is removed where bone is close to the tooth, gum can grow back. That is why we check bone levels on the X-ray and do crown lengthening when needed.
Sensitivity
Newly exposed tooth surface can be sensitive for a few weeks; it settles, and bonding or veneers cover it if planned.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
