Chipped front tooth: how composite bonding repairs it in one visit

A chipped edge is the simplest thing bonding does. What it costs, how long it lasts and when a chip needs more than composite.

The usual outcome

Most chipped front teeth are rebuilt in a single appointment. The dentist roughens the chipped surface slightly, applies a bonding agent, layers tooth-coloured composite to replace the missing corner, shapes it by hand and polishes it. Done well, you cannot see where the tooth ends and the composite starts.

A single tooth takes well under an hour. The published range at Auradentis is £80–150 per tooth, against £250–450 in the UK.

How a chip is assessed first

Not every chip is only cosmetic. Before rebuilding anything the dentist checks three things:

How deep it goes. A chip in enamel only is straightforward. A chip that exposes dentine, the softer yellow layer, is more sensitive and needs sealing properly. A chip that reaches the nerve changes the plan entirely.

Whether the tooth is alive. A tooth that was knocked hard can die months later even if the chip looked small. Sensitivity testing and an X-ray answer this.

Why it chipped. A tooth that chipped on a nut is different from a tooth chipping because you grind at night or because your bite loads that edge every time you close. Rebuilding the shape without addressing the cause means it chips again.

When composite is not enough

  • The nerve is exposed. The tooth needs root canal treatment first, then rebuilding.
  • More than about a third of the crown is gone. Composite has nothing to hold on to; a crown is more predictable.
  • The fracture runs below the gum. That tooth may not be saveable; the plan moves to extraction and a replacement.
  • The chip is a symptom of heavy grinding. The repair is done, but a night guard comes with it.

An X-ray and photos tell us which of these you are dealing with before you book a flight.

Does the repair look obvious

Not if the shade is built in layers. Natural teeth are not one colour: the biting edge is more translucent, the body is more opaque, the neck is warmer. Good bonding copies that with two or three shades of composite rather than one. It is slower and it is the difference between a repair that disappears and one you notice in photographs.

How long it lasts

Five to eight years for the composite itself. A repaired edge is in the same position as before, so the same habit that chipped it once will chip it again. If you grind, wear the guard. If you open things with your teeth, stop.

If the composite chips later, it is repaired by adding material. At Auradentis that repair is free of charge when you come back; travel and accommodation are not covered.

Is it worth travelling for one tooth

Honestly, no. One tooth rarely covers the flight. It makes sense when the chip is part of something larger: several worn edges, a set of front teeth you want evened out, or bonding combined with whitening and a check-up in the same trip. That is how most of our patients do it, in a visit of one to two days.

See the full composite bonding page for prices, steps and FAQs, or send a photo of the tooth and we will tell you what it needs.
